Bell Curve Generator In Statistics, a normal distribution is an important method used to get statistical information such as the mean or the standard deviation of the given set of data. Bell curve is the graph generated when data on the horizontal X-axis is plotted against amount of data on vertical Y-axis. Bell shaped curve is also called the Normal Distribution curve and is generated to analyze the given set of information. Example 1: In a classroom, 68% of students weight are between 45kg and 65kg. Assuming this data is normally distributed, what are the mean and the standard deviation? Mean can be calculated by taking the average of the maximum and the minimum numbers. Mean = (45 + 65) / 2 = 110/2. So, Mean = 55kg 68% is 1 standard deviation on either side of the Mean. So, 2 total standard deviations on the Bell curve! This is the Empirical Rule. Hence, 1 Standard Deviation = (65 45)/ 2 = 20/2 = 10 1 Standard Deviation = 10kg Examples 2: In a classroom, 99.7% of the scores of an exam are between 76 and 94 points. Assuming this data is normally distributed, what are the mean and the standard deviation? Mean can be calculated by taking the average of the maximum and the minimum numbers. Mean = (94 + 76) / 2 = 170/2 = 85 Mean = 85points. 99.7% is 3 standard deviations on either side of the mean. So, 6 total standard deviations. This is the Empirical Rule. How to Network as a Recent College Graduate New to the real world? Feeling a little dumbfounded as to how to get anywhere or do anything in the job market? Well, that is where networking comes in. Networking is a tool used by everyone, but its particularly useful and important for fresh post-grads who desperately want to break into the career world. It is very easy to feel out of place doing this, however. Youre so used to being a student and having the university constantly hand you opportunities. Of course, you always felt comfortable taking advantage of those opportunities because you had the comfort of being a student at that school to back you up. But now that youre away from campus and all on your own, you dont have that sort of camaraderie to associate yourself with anymore and therefore may feel slightly intimidated or insecure approaching such networking opportunities. These feelings are completely expected due to the infamously difficult transition youre going through yet, you must overcome these irrational fears and put yourself out there. Landing any sort of professional opportunity is extremely hard, so it should be a give-in that youre certainly not going to accomplish it by just sitting at home, sending out the occasional resum. To succeed in this journey, a substantial amount of extra work is going to be required, which takes us back to the concept of networking. There are plenty of different ways to go about networking and you should make use of as many of them as you can. First off, you must re-evaluate your feelings of detachment from your university. Maybe you are no longer a student there, but you are now an alum, which is just as strong a connection. You can utilize this relationship with your school just as much as you did when you were still enrolled. Being an alum comes with tons of perks, such as alumni events and clubs. Attend some of these and you will meet tons of people of all ages. In one way or another, you are bound to come across at least a few significant connections that can lead you in a direction youd like to go. You have every reason to be at these various meet-ups, so there is no need to feel any anxiety toward them. This is still your school, so be a part of it and reach out to the community within it. Next: always, always, always follow up with past supervisors. This is not necessarily in reference to your boss at your old part-time job, but the people who oversaw your work at former internships, or other upstanding organizations you may have been a part of in college, such as the student government or school newspaper. For the latter, youd be checking in with students you worked with who are now graduated as well to see what theyre up to you never know where they might be! But in regards to your past internships, get in touch with those supervisors right away. Odds are these are the closest opportunities youve had to real career-like experiences, so make the most of those relationships and suggest to meet with these people. This is a great chance to see if there are any openings for full-time positions that the supervisor may think you would be a great fit for, either at their company or someone elses. Even if they dont have an answer for you on the spot, you have now reminded t hem who you are and what you are doing, so you will hopefully be on their minds the next time they do hear of an opening. Whoever you are reconnecting with, there is always a possibility they will know of something, or at least know of someone else who knows something. Its the classic six degrees of separation rule that will help you more often than not. The joining and connecting doesnt stop with places and people you already know get out there and try out new clubs and organizations. Volunteer, take a fun class, sign up for a team sport at the gym. Do things that interest you that will allow you to have fun as well as continue to meet people. Not only will you increase your chances of networking, you may make a few friends along the way also. The common factor that you must keep in mind throughout all of this communicating, however, is to work your field of interest into the conversation at some point. Obviously, youre not going to make any networking success if you never bring up your career aspirations or experience. But by no means do you want to bluntly come off as a kid saying, I want a job, can you get me a job? so be natural and mature as you go about this. These opportunities are usually brought to your attention when you least expect to hear about them. Finally, when youre not practicing the networking magic directly with people, be persistent and confident when reaching out to companies. If you really love a certain business and would sincerely love to be a part of it, send them a note just expressing that interest and attach your resum with the intention of them just keeping it on file incase anything ever opens up (unless, however, the company specifically instructs people not to contact them for these purposes). As long as you arent obnoxious and repeatedly bothersome about it, they should respect your initiative and appreciate knowing that someone genuinely wants to work for them. Just like with your other networking subjects, these people will now have you on their mind or at least on file and may come to you first when a desired position becomes available. All in all, this whole process is mainly about the effort you make. The more you reach out and try, the better chances youll have of grabbing a coveted job position before someone else. Do more than the average job seeker would and youll soon find yourself dominating as a young professional.

If you are an aspiring English major, writer, or simply looking to improve your reading and writing skills, heres what you can anticipate about college-level English: 1. College-level English emphasizes critical thinking In college-level English courses, theres more of a focus on critical thinking, both in the way you read, annotate, and interpret texts, and in the way you write. In general, college-level English moves away from formulaic structures, like the five-paragraph essay, and asks you to consider the nuances and complexities of an argument. Youll likely have fewer exams and tests than you did in high school, and instead have more papers, essays, and research projectspossibly even presentations. 4 Essential Classic Rock Guitar Solos That Will Make You a Better Player Megan L. Learning to play other peoples guitar solos is a great way to begin learning to write your own! Guitar teacher Nils B. shares his tips to learning four classic rock solos so you can develop your technique An essential part of every musicians development is to imitate those who have already mastered their instrument. After settling on a song, give it a couple of close listens (preferably on headphones or a decent stereo), pick up a good transcription, then learn the rhythm parts, while analyzing the chord progressions and any distinctive rhythmical features. Then start learning the solo, phrase by phrase, while determining the relationship of each note with the chord thats being played, as well as the key of the song. Also try listening carefully to the guitar tones, and be conservative with the amount of gain or overdrive when trying to copy these. Among other drawbacks, too much overdrive tends to hide your mistakes. Once you are able to play along with the original (or a backing track if you can find one), try recording yourself, and pay close attention to the details, such as timing, and bending accuracy. And as a final step, once youre fairly comfortable, try to improvise using the same concepts, simply start by making small variations to the original solo. And of course, if you havent already, seek out an experienced instructor who can give you essential feedback about how to play guitar solos like these listed below and keep you from making fundamental mistakes. Four Guitar Solos You Should Study The Eagles Hotel California This is my personal favorite of the four. Since the progression doesnt stay in the same key, you are forced to take a more chord based approach. And although there are still plenty of great B minor blues licks to be found, there is also a healthy dose of major pentatonics, played using fairly tricky compound bending techniques commonly used by country guitarists. On top of this, the F#7 chord adds a darker flavor, which is nicely addressed in the solo with some harmonic minor licks. Last but not least, theres the harmonized arpeggio outro, which is great to expand your fretboard knowledge, so be sure to learn both parts! In terms of guitar tone, its a pretty straight forward approach. Most guitars played into a somewhat overdriven amp will sound great. Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven Jimmy Page was heavily influenced by American blues and rock and roll guitarists, which can be heard in the many great blues licks demonstrated here. Be sure to pay close attention to the dynamic build up, his vibrato, and timing. Page was known for using Gibson Les Pauls, SG doublenecks, and Fender Telecasters into either big Marshall stacks or low wattage combo amplifiers, so any tube overdriven lead sound will do. Try to add some delay to help with the sustain. Guns Roses Sweet Child O Mine First off, it should be noted that this was originally recorded with the guitar tuned down a half step (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb). Even though it is in the key of Eb minor technically, it feels like E because of the tuning. This guitar solo actually consists of two shorter solos and a long outro. The slower, more melodic middle solos in Eb minor are a great opportunity to venture out of the familiar box at the 12th fret, and explore the area around the 7th. The outro solo is a series of well executed pentatonic blues ideas via a tricky harmonic minor lick in the buildup- all while using a wah pedal. On the recording, Slash used a custom built Les Paul copy into a modified 70s Marshall amplifier, but any dual humbucker equipped guitar into a Marshall-esque sounding amp will work. Try using the neck pickup for the melodic parts, and switch to the bridge pickup for the more aggressive sounding climax, together with the wah wah. Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb This solo is a great way to develop your sustain and vibrato because of the slower tempo, which really works well with David Gilmours melodic lead playing. Although his playing is largely pentatonic based there are some tasteful notes from the minor scale thrown in, together with some great bends and tremolo arm tricks. David Gilmour is known for using fairly elaborate setups, but the essentials to get his sound for this song would be a Stratocaster-style guitar with a tremolo into a relatively saturated/compressed fuzz or distortion pedal (he often used an Electro Harmonix Big Muff), into a clean amp via some delay. There are obviously plenty of other solos out there which would make good examples, but it is essential that they consist of memorable and coherent phrases. Some other suggestions would include Ozzy Osbournes No More Tears, Thin Lizzys Dancing in the Moonlight, Jimi Hendrixs All Along the Watchtower, Deep Purples Highway Star, and Lynyrd Skynyrds Free Bird. Learning how to play guitar solos can be tricky, so whichever solo you choose, be sure to learn it inside-out (any capable guitar teacher should be able to assist you), and be open to critique from the people around you. Being a Masters student in London usually means long hours in the library, essays that will make your head hurt and one too many existential crises. It also means you yearn to step out of your academic lifestyle and do something different. For me, this welcome respite came in the form of Tutorfair. Having seen advertisements of the company pop up on my social media, I finally decided to give it a go and I am so glad I did. Tutorfair is an educational company that provides you with the opportunity to help tutor students and adults of all ages to improve their subjects. These subjects range from sports to academics and you have the luxury of choosing as many subjects as you wish to tutor once you sign up to this website. Excited and a tad bit nervous, I got down to business and started my own profile on the website which was quite simple, that coming from a technologically challenged person like me, is a big deal ! Once I had signed up, I was greeted with a warm welcome mail and an invitation to a seminar hosted by the company in partnership with Teach First, one of the leading educational organisations attempting to end educational inequality in London. The training day provided two massive benefits. For one, it taught you and educated you, the tutor, about how to improve your teaching skills and your interactions with the students. It also speeded up your verification process on the website. So, on a not so sunny London morning, I headed to the training day, curious and ready to participate in everything it had to offer. It was a wonderful experience to say the least. I was made aware of the huge disparities in education in the city and learnt a plethora of ways to not just intermingle with the students but also make the syllabus more interesting. I got to learn how to pick up on subtle clues about students who might not be coming from the most stable of homes and how to deal with them without hurting or causing harm to the students and also got to practice the newly learned methods. The training day also gave me the chance to network with other tutors who not only came from all different spheres of life but also had loads of experiences of their own to share. The entire day was fascinating and I would do it all over again, if given the chance. Once I had completed the training, I was invited to the Tutorfair office, where I was provided with a more detailed description as to how the company and website works. I understood the ropes of the company and was delighted to stumble across two adorable pets roaming around in the office. Hurray for all the animal lovers !! Amidst talking to the other newly signed tutors and munching on delicious snacks, we were led to a small room one by one where we were videotaped. This video allows for a more personal network between the client and tutor, providing the client with a little more information regarding the tutor they might possibly book. Before I knew it, my profile was live on the website. The company gives the tutors the luxury of choosing the rate per hour at which they would like to tutor and also choose the timings for when they are available. Having one or two or more references makes the profile even more attractive and welcoming and soon, I was caught up in the world of tutoring. There are times when it can get challenging, parents worried about their childrenâs performances might need reassuring and at times even the children need to be constantly reminded that their hard work and dedication will pay off. Providing incentive, confidence and encouragement is key along with a constant stream of patience and motivation. For me, applying to Tutorfair was one of the best decisions I could have made. Not only did it give me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and submerge myself in the world of academics from a different point of view but it also gave me the chance to give back by volunteering and by sharing the knowledge I had amassed. Does ADHD Increase Risk for Addiction A recent New York Times article entitled, The 4 Traits That Put Kids At Risk For Addiction, featured the results of a study and corresponding treatment program developed by Dr. Patricia Conrod at the University of Montreal. Dr. Conrods research points to several personality traits that can identify 90 percent of the highest risk children, targeting risky traits before they cause problems. The four traits identified in the study? Sensation-seeking, impulsiveness, anxiety sensitivity and hopelessness. As a parent of a child with ADHD who suffers from impulsiveness (one of the cornerstone behavior issues of ADHD), you may then wonder: does this mean my child will struggle with addiction as a teen or an adult? My own research has focused on alcohol and drug use in college students with ADHD. So I wanted to take a moment to share with you what the research today shows on ADHD and addition, and what steps you can take to help your teen and young adult avoid falling into some of these patterns. Research on ADHD and addiction does indeed show that both males and females with ADHD are at increased risk for alcohol and drug-related problems and addiction. My own research shows that while college students may report using the same amount of alcohol or marijuana as their peers without ADHD, they experience greater negative consequences and impairment as a result of their use. Across multiple studies by a variety of researchers, adolescents with ADHD are more likely to start using alcohol or drugs earlier than adolescents without ADHD. And, early initiation of alcohol or drug use, even in small amounts at first, is associated with increased risk for alcohol or drug problems later in life. The indiv iduals with ADHD who are at the greatest risk for addiction are those who have a history of alcohol or drug addiction in their family. In fact, researchers have even identified a shared genetic link between ADHD and alcohol use disorders that may contribute to this risk. As parents there are things that you can do now to help protect your child or teen from developing alcohol or drug-related problems. I recommend focusing on four areas: Seek effective ADHD treatment. Children and adolescents whose ADHD symptoms are well controlled through behavioral interventions or medication management may be less likely to self-medicate or impulsively seek-out alcohol and drugs. Some parents are concerned that ADHD treatment with stimulant medications may increase the risk for drug addiction later in life. But in fact, research shows no increased risk and some studies suggest that early treatment with stimulant medication may actually protect against the development of alcohol and drug addiction later in life. Teach coping strategies. Poor coping and stress management skills are a consistent predictor of alcohol and drug related problems among college students and adults. Teaching your child or teen to effectively manage his or her stress and respond in a healthy way to lifes ups and downs can help protect him or her against addiction. Help your child get involved in stress-relieving extra-curricular activities that he or she can turn to again and again throughout their life. Also encourage him or her to learn mindfulness strategies that have been proven to reduce stress in teens and adults. I recommend The Stress Reduction Workbook for Teens: Mindfulness Skills to Help you Deal with Stress, by Gina Biegel as a starting point. Monitor your child or teen. Monitoring how your child or teen is spending his or her time and knowing who your childs friends are will help you intervene early if you think he or she is experimenting with alcohol or drugs. Make sure your child is participating in structured activities afterschool (the time when kids are most likely to be unsupervised), and dont let your child spend time at the homes of friends whose parents allow alcohol or marijuana use in their house. Talk to your teen about the risks. Let your teen (or preteen) know that his or her ADHD puts him or her at increased risk for alcohol or drug addiction. If there is a history of alcohol or drug addiction in your family, share this with your child. He or she may not want to hear it from you, and may seem very dismissive during these conversations, but talking to your child can still make a difference. If you drink alcohol, model responsible drinking for your child or teen. The things you do are just as powerful as the things you say when it comes to influencing your child. A diagnosis of ADHD does not mean your child is destined for a life of addiction. What it does mean is that ADHD doesnt usually go away. ADHD is usually a lifetime diagnosis that requires constant vigilance. Throughout your childs life, beginning with diagnosis and all through adulthood, he or she will be confronted with situations that challenge him or her differently than his or her peers because of his or her ADHD. But the key to success, now and in the future, is acknowledgement and awareness, together with a set of tools and strategies to overcome those situations and thrive! ABOUT DR.
